So I don’t come across as too much of a curmudgeon, I’m also occasionally corresponding with someone who had some interesting ideas, but just had no earthly idea the cost of software (and just in case – no, you can’t build a social networking site for $8K). I was able to educate him a bit, and I think he’s going to do well eventually. So please don’t be afraid to approach me if you’re genuinely looking to learn – I love to help people out, and I’m sure there are plenty of things you could teach me as well.

A couple of highly-motivated college students living in their parents’ homes could do it for a fraction of that ;-)

I could build a lot of different things for “cheap” or even “free”, but only if I limit the “cost” to actual dollars spent directly on the project.
But you knew that already :-)

The cost of developed-to-spec software is certainly something the typical business owner (esp. small business owner) knows nothing about. I think I will tackle this in a future blog post, on my currently non-existent blog. :)
